Brown Girls And Bois: Objectification is no fucking joke → queerbrownxx.tumblr.com

queerbrownxx:

I work in a setting where I have to wear lots of makeup and be all feminine and subtly sexual and I’ve had to resort to going to work stoned in order to deal with the CONSTANT harrassment I get from misogynist men.

And racialized sexism is real, y’all. The brown girls have to put up with way more…

“The reality is that fat people are often supported in hating their bodies, in starving themselves, in engaging in unsafe exercise, and in seeking out weight loss by any means necessary. A thin person who does these things is considered mentally ill. A fat person who does these things is redeemed by them. This is why our culture has no concept of a fat person who also has an eating disorder. If you’re fat, it’s not an eating disorder — it’s a lifestyle change.” —

Lesley Kinzel (via curvesahead)

I will always reblog this because it is so so important.

(via infinitetransit)

I just want to nail this to every stable surface I can find. I cannot count the amount of times that I’ve seen fat folks being encouraged, cajoled, and even forced into behaviors that would be recognized as disordered eating/exercising patterns in thin folks.

Pretty much everything that’s done on shows like The Biggest Loser would be called out as pro-ana/pro-orthorexia in a thin person. Exercising past the point that it hurts, to the point where you’re throwing up, even injuring yourself? Berating yourself because you didn’t lose ENOUGH weight this week? Constantly talking about how fat is weakness and thinness will make everything better, about how you can’t stand to be your current weight anymore? Emphasis on weight as a sign of how much control, strength, and worth you have? Viewing food as bad, as a temptation to sin? Constant sharing and talking about tips on how to minimize food intake, how to lose weight?

That sounds exactly like every pro-ana/pro-mia blog I’ve ever seen. It’s also what fat people are told we need to be doing to ourselves until we’re thin.

Free Viagra, transgender surgery on chopping block at National Defence → theglobeandmail.com

Considering the tiny number of people that have transitioned within the Canadian Forces up to this point this is a drop in the bucket. The CF wastes more money on photocopy toner and printer ink than it spends on trans* surgeries I can almost guarantee you. And furthermore: Free Viagara?!?! WTF!!!!!! And to think that when I joined up in 1991 everyone worried that they were putting saltpeter in the food at the mess! This is bullshit transphobia disguising itself as fiscal responsibility pure and simple.

I have said it a million times before and I will say it a billion times more: If you are LGBT DO NOT join the Canadian Forces. Their claims about tolerence and diversity are bullshit! Homophobia and transphobia are founding principles of the military culture. They will tell you anything they think will work to get you in. Once they have you nobody will hear you scream.

You can trust me. I speak from experience.

How many cis people does it change to take a lightbulb?

amydentata:

None. Why can’t you just accept your lightbulb the way it is?

How many trans people does it take to change a lightbulb?

Only one, but they’ll need a note from two doctors.

Motion to reopen study of when life begins opposed by opposition, Harper

governmentofcanada:

Conservative MP Stephen Woodworth’s private member’s motion was discussed in Parliament today. Motion 312 called for a study of the legal definition of when life begins. Members of Parliament, including PM Stephen Harper and Conservative MP Gordon O’Connor as well as the Liberals and NDP spoke out in opposition to the motion. It will be brought to vote Wednesday.

Read about it at CBC

Glad to hear that it isn’t likely to go any further than this.

“

NDP Leader Thomas Mulcair was asking Harper if he intended to extend the Afghanistan mission past 2014 after a Postmedia News report Wednesday said U.S officials had asked Canadian special forces to stay past the withdrawal date.

The prime minister responded the NDP has a pacifistic ideology “regardless of circumstances” and his government would make the right decision for Afghanistan’s security.

“In 1939, the NDP leader didn’t even want to support the fight against Hitler,” Harper said, before being drowned out by cat calls.

NDP MPs gently reminded Harper from across the aisle that the NDP didn’t come into existence until 1961, birthed by a union between the socialist Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (CCF) and the Canadian Labour Congress.

“CCF, NDP, same difference,” Harper responded curtly.

“I guess we can start talking about Reform Party policies,” Mulcair replied, to the delight of the opposition benches.

”

Stephen Harper shouted down for saying NDP didn’t support fight against Hitler. I may have cackled gleefully at Mulcair’s response. (via bucketofrhymes)

To those mourning the loss of Paige Clay, I ask you to remember too the lives of other trans women murdered without organized response or national attention.

glyttr:

I am thinking in particular of Coko Williams, who was murdered three weeks ago with barely any response whatsoever by “the community”, though I’m speaking of all trans women whose murders went by practically unnoticed. When I grieve, I grieve too for Coko, for Shelley Hilliard, for the trans women whose lives were taken away with barely a whisper in retaliation. Be loud and grieve. Please.

Tell Harper: Hands off our reproductive rights → petition.liberal.ca

lemon-sprinkles:

Stephen Harper said he would not re-open the debate on a woman’s right to choose.

But 24 hours from now, he’ll allow Conservative MP Stephen Woodworth to put forward a motion in the House of Commons which clearly opens the possibility of re-criminalizing abortion.

It’s up to you to make sure Canadian women and men know about it.

transfeminism:

When members of the media report on cis women who have changed their names—either through marriage or for some other reason—they don’t tend to say, “Jane Smith, who was born Jane Johnson.” Yet when members of the media are reporting on trans women they, as a matter of routine, almost always give…
